Acai Consumption May Improve Metabolic Syndrome
A new clinical trial reveals the health benefits of Acai on the human body and its ability to reduce certain risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome including heart disease, diabetes and stroke.
New Hope 360 | Sambazon, the pioneer of organic Amazon superfoods, announced results from a new clinical trial with Medicus Research investigating the health benefits of acai on the human body. The study found improvements in biomarkers associated with metabolic syndrome. The pilot study was published in Nutrition Journal (volume 10, issue 45) after a thorough peer review.
"The initial clinical trial results were overwhelmingly positive and show the potential of whole acai fruit pulp to reduce risk factors associated with metabolic disorders in mildly overweight adults," explained Dr. Jack F. Bukowski, M.D., Ph.D., a member of Sambazon's Scientific Advisory Board and current director of the Nutritional Science Research Institute. "Given the growing incidence of metabolic disorders, including obesity, Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in the U.S., this study warrants the need for additional research to fully explore the acai berry's health benefits."
For this study, researchers recruited 10 overweight yet otherwise healthy adult male and female participants. Each participant consumed 100 grams of Sambazon acai frozen fruit pulp twice daily before meals for four weeks without changing any other part of their diet. The study found that fasting glucose, post-meal increases in blood glucose, insulin, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) were significantly reduced compared to baseline after 30 days of consuming Sambazon's acai.
"This pilot study demonstrates the ability of Sambazon's acai pulp to significantly lower several markers of cardiovascular risk in a relatively short period of time," explained Dr. Jay Udani, M.D., CEO and medical director of Medicus Research. "These positive results are in line with prior studies and warrant further study on the acai berry's ability to promote cardiovascular and metabolic health."
A purple palm fruit found in the Amazon rainforest, acai is rich in antioxidants, notably anthocyanins, and healthy omega fats similar to an olive oil and contains almost no sugar. Known for introducing acai into the U.S. market, Sambazon's organic line of premium health products now feature Amazon superfood juices, smoothies, sorbets and smoothie packs.
