Two new recent studys, one carried out in Sweden by Karolinska Institute and the other by Wayne State University in Michigan, revealed that prolonged exposure to the radiofrequency (RF) energy that cell phones emit adversely affects sleep and severely disrupts sleep patterns. Prolonged exposure in these studies were defined as 3 hours or more.
The study group was made up of 35 men and 36 women, aged between 18 and 45. Each was exposed to mobile phone radiations as they prepared to sleep in three different test sessions in the laboratory. The data collected during these sessions included self-reported symptoms such as headaches, cognitive functions, mood, and electroencephalographic recordings.
The participants were either exposed to phoney exposure (none) or actual 884MHz GSM wireless communication signals equivalent to those received when using a cell phone.
For those exposed to the actual radio frequency energy as opposed to those who received phoney exposure some marked differences were reported. Sleep did not occur for a good one hour after being exposed compared to not, and it took those people longer to enter the first stage of deeper sleep and they spent less time in that deepest stage.
During laboratory exposure to 884 MHz wireless signals, the study revealed that the elements of sleep that are believed to be significant for recovery from daily wear and tear are adversely affected.
Participants, who before the study had no self-reported symptoms related to mobile phone use, developed more headaches during actual RF exposure compared to the participants that were not exposed.
Interestingly enough, the study was sponsored by the Mobile Manufacturers Forum, an industry group representing makers of cell phones.
