Toxic Soup of Plastic Debris, Twice the Size of Texas, Discovered in the Pacific Ocean

Toxic Soup of Plastic Debris, Twice the Size of Texas, Discovered in the Pacific Ocean

Floating in the Northern Pacific Ocean, a huge expanse of plastic refuse.

A giant collection of plastic refuse floating in the ocean, nicknamed: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, was originally discovered by Charles Moore. Mr. Moore was just taking a leisurly long sale on a yacht and decided to travel through was is called "the North Pacific Gyre" (a vortext created by prevailing weather patterns).

He discovered a huge expanse of Toxic Soup.

This massive floating filth lies just below the surface of the ocean and is undetected by satellite photography. The only way it can be seen is by ships sailing through it.

Obviously, it poses a serious risk to marine mammals and sea birds and fish. But it also is affecting human helth as well: these materials act as chemical sponges and attract synthetic chemicals like hydrocarbons and the pesticide DDT. It is unavoidable for these materials to enter the food chain once they exist in our oceans.

Ultimately, we end up eating this garbage. And paying the consequences.
